On Dreamwidth, Moving, Polls, etc.
The polls closed two days ago, and by a far-greater-than-the-Turkey-referendum-or-the-US-election margin, Move has won - with 21 for votes and one against. This means we're going to begin the process of moving the game to Dreamwidth, which we hope to complete by May 3rd, three days before the summer semester Welcome Picnic.

To do that, we're going to need everyone's help on two matters. Please make sure to read this post carefully.

1. Everyone needs to move their character journals to Dreamwidth
This one is fairly straightforward. You can't play in a Dreamwidth game if you don't have a Dreamwidth journal. Please make sure you have these ready by April 24th! If you have not yet made Dreamwidth backups of your journals, here's how to do it:

Dreamwidth comes equipped with an LJ importer tool that will copy all of your entries, friends, userpics and comments from your LiveJournal; all you have to do is enter your LJ username and password and tick all the necessary boxes when asked. You need a Dreamwidth account for this, but it doesn't necessarily have to have the same username as the one you're using on LiveJournal; any one will do.

The process takes some time, so don't expect everything to get imported immediately.

It's also finnicky about icons: it will only import all of them if your Dreamwidth account has enough icon space to hold them. A basic Dreamwidth account holds 15 icons - if you don't want to buy a paid account there, you'll have to let your paid account run out or delete icons until you hit 15 before you run the importer. It doesn't matter how many icons you've used in the past at that point: they'll all be imported, though you can only use fifteen of them until you buy more icon space.

Okay, so that's it?
No, there's more! This process will import all entries, comments, icons and friends to your account. However, you might have played out threads in other journals or communities. Those comments are not yet claimed, and aren't linked to your account.

Luckily, Dreamwidth has a function for that, too. Just go to the Claim Your OpenId page. Fill in your LiveJournal URL in the 'Claim a new OpenID URL' box, then follow instructions. It might take a while for DW to finish this process, but it will mail you when it's done.

2. We need to know which characters you intend to keep playing.
While Dreamwidth imports can take care of a lot, one thing it doesn't do is import community members. This means we'll have to do this manually, and putting effort into sending invites to characters you're not planning to play anymore is a bit of a waste.

We've had a Fandom High census poll in the works for a while; with an eye on the Dreamwidth move, we think this is a good time to deploy it. Please make sure to vote here by Monday, April 24th on which of your own characters you'd like to keep, and which you're not really planning to play anymore.

Finally, we'll make our final FH backup imports on May 5th. Please don't post anything into the comms at that time - we can't guarantee it'll make the trip over to Dreamwidth if you do.

Questions, comments, concerns?

Just a reminder, soniaroadsqueen's LJ Juggler works for DW, too!

A note about the future Dreamwidth friending list that I only remembered just now, and that people will probably like: the admin console still works for adding friends (with no limit per day) because the DW admins can comprehend the concept that it's not possible to spam someone via you reading their journal. So we'll be able to go back to "Copy this, paste it here, click go, and you're good" and poor lovely never_dull won't have to keep trying to update her app to overcome the many ways LJ breaks their own code.

The commands are a tiny bit different, because DW has things separated out into "read" and "give access," but we'll write the friending list text up to accomplish all of that, once we have a completed list to work with.

This will be awesome!

It also means I won't have to go pestering my friend who's a DW coder anymore going, "do you have any idea what LJ could have broken THIS time?"

Aaaand because I keep thinking of More Things:

When you're done copying journals over, whether current characters or former characters that you just want to preserve, please please don't delete the old LJ journals, no matter how cathartic it might feel?

While journals, entries, and comments will all port over, regular old HTML links to other LJ entries are still going to link to LJ entries, and there's no easy way to mass-convert them, because the entry-numbers don't match between the two sites. Which means if you delete the LJ version of a journal, all of your old linkdrops and large parts of other people's, as well as past radio posts, will become useless.

(This also means that we're going to need to update the big FH Index and the internal links between various admin posts to point to the new DW versions. Which will likely take quite a while, so please bear with us on that one, when you find some informational posts linking to LJ, and some linking to Dreamwidth.)

And an error that I just had come up importing alumni accounts (or as just happened, when I changed an account password) --until you have agreed to LJ's new TOS for each account, LJ won't let you export to DW. It's what "Term of Service Error" means.

Hi, apologies if this was answered elsewhere but I want to make sure I understand. I know you're only asking active journals be moved to DW, but is there any benefit for archiving purposes to creating a Dreamwidth journal for characters I do intend to drop? Like, in the ideal scenario, would you want Dreamwidth copies of characters' journals even if they're no longer in play so that the old threads are preserved?

I chose not to mention that in the post because moving to DW is a sometimes arduous process and I don't want to put pressure on anyone when it's not necessary - but I would love to see more people port over their older accounts for archiving purposes, prettying up the imported archives of FH, etc. I will definitely be doing that personally.

Doing that and claiming your OpenID would make threads in other journals and in the comms a lot prettier, for what it's worth!

Links people made to threads in your character's journal -- in linkdrops or as an internal reference in a comment (like wacky phone day cross-references) -- will still go back to LJ, though. That one's unfixable, unfortunately.

Heads up for any other underscore fiends like myself -- according to the last email I got from Dreamwidth, sometimes the Open ID process fails if there are dashes or underscores in a username.

Their exact language is:

We do have a known issue that we're trying to figure out the cause of: if your OpenID URL (your username on the other site) has a hyphen/underscore in it, sometimes the job will silently fail. This bug has been driving us up the wall for ages, and we haven't been able to find and fix it yet. If comments made by your OpenID haven't updated to show your DW account 24 hours later, you've been hit by that. We aren't sure yet if we'll be able to rely on your first authentication attempt once we fix the bug, so to be absolutely on the safe side, it's best not to delete your LJ account until we're able to fix it.

I can't tell from that whether you should keep trying until it works, or if it's more like "if it fails the first time, it's gonna keep failing." But knowing to watch for it can't hurt.

Hmm, one minor thing of note: DW allows journal names of up to 25 characters, so you'll probably want to update the "15 characters or less" bit of the application form.

Not that I noticed this while creating a new journal and going "nah, that username's too long, it's never gonna -- waaaaaaaaaaait."

I can't tell you how happy this girl was to get her PROPER priestess name over on DW, especially since boreal actually means something, instead of just being short for 'arboreal.'

Oh the arduous decision process for this journal name, LET ME WHINE TO YOU ABOUT IT.

Importing icons failed for both Leto's and Lucille's journals, and I can't figure out why. Has anyone else has this problem? Am I missing something obvious? I've tried several times.

You have a free account on Dreamwidth and a paid account on LJ (for Lucille; it's probably the same for Leto).

The LJ account has 27 active icons and the DW account only has 15 icon spaces - that breaks the icon importer.

Sadly, the "bust the LJ account down to Basic level" solution Len listed in the main post doesn't work anymore. I just figured out today that they broke it with this new update.

So the only way to get your icon transfer to work is to either upgrade to a paid DW account (which will increase the icon slots to 30) or delete the extra icons from the LJ account until it's down to 15.

(If you save the files and the keywords, then you can always manually add them to the Dreamwidth account later, whenever you do want to make it paid.)

Has there been a new friending list done for DW, yet?

Also, will we be sent invites for the comms over there?

Yes to both! But we haven't made a post yet about either; one will go up on the LJ friendslist sometime in the near future.
